Workout Wednesday: Saving “Grace”

If you are familiar with the Crossfit world or some of the common benchmark workouts done in Crossfit, you have probably heard of “Grace” … If you haven’t I will explain the workout.

30 clean & jerks. Done for time.

Yupp. That’s it. Sounds pretty manageable right? Well the goal of it being to work up to using the Rx weights if you are not there yet and being able to do it in the fastest time possible. So, yes. It is definitely manageable. BUT if you are really pushing yourself if can also make a fun challenge.

Now, you might be wondering why I am writing about such a basic workout. Well, on a typical day that is really all it is, a basic workout of 30 clean and jerks. However, for one day each year, it becomes SO MUCH MORE than just a workout.

One of the things that I am beyond proud to say I have been a part of since the beginning of my Crossfit time is participating in Barbells For Boobs each October.

We all know that October is breast cancer awareness month. Each year at this time we begin to see a sea of pink flood EVERRRYYTTHIIINNGGG. That also includes the Crossfit community. All over the country, crossfitters come together at events both big and small to complete this simple yet powerful workout of 30 clean and jerks and together raise money for an amazing organization that works to promote and service men and women with early detection tests.

This year will make it my 3rd year in a row fundraising for Barbells For Boobs and completing “Grace”. My goal each year has been to reach a PR both in the workout and in my fundraising. My first year I completed the workout with just 75# and raised $165. Last year, I was able to complete the workout with the RX weight of 95# and I was able to increase the amount raised to $246.

For this third year, my goal in the workout is to again use the RX weight and to beat my time of 6:40. My goal for fundraising is to double that number fromΒ last year and hit $500! πŸ˜€

Also, this year, I am insanely excited to say that I will be having my boyfriend join me in his very first year participating in Barbells For Boobs. We will also be lucky enough to be participating in the Central Texas stop of the Pink Bra Tour. I feel so blessed to be part of such an uplifting and inspiring community and be able to advocate for everyone’s RIGHT TO KNOW.

PLEASE help me in reaching my fundraising goal this year and help to save the lives of men and women by providing them with the opportunity for early detection.

Trendy and Functional: Owl Be Sweatin’ … Review and Giveaway

As a crossfit chick, my gym days do not revolve around how I look while getting my wod on… Mostly because I am usually dripping in sweat with my hair in a million places and my face full of exhaustion. Not the cutest of looks haha… BUT, as a chick in general, what I do enjoy is a fun colored or sassy slogan filled outfit to rock while I am ruining it with my sweat. And hey there is no shame in that! Sometimes its the little things can be huge motivators or just add that extra burst of excitement; especially on days you would rather not.

I continue to develop a decent collection of bright colored shorts and pants, neon tanks, multicolored everything, tanks with motivating sayings or things that just make me feel bad ass haha, funny knee socks, everything you could imagine. One thing though that I did not have and was not sure how I would feel about is headbands.

Even as a kid I was never a huge headband person. Honestly I just tend to think I look silly in them. However, recently it has become more and more of a trend. Fitness girls everywhere are flocking to different versions of these fun, funky, workout accessories. So of course I decided, welp I have to at least try it.

With that I borrowed headbands we had at home, things my sisters have worn, things that did nothing for me but annoy the crap out of me during a workout and fall out of my head. After a few failed attempts to like or find use out of any of these headbands I thought what the hell is the appeal of these things?! And with that, I gave up.

Enter a IG page I came across and became unexpectedly intrigued with. Owl Be Sweatin’ is a headband brand whose designs seemed cute and appropriate for all fit chicks; young and old, crossfitter to runner to yogi and everything in between. They could be casual or used in a serious workout. At least that’s how they appeared. For some reason this brand stuck in my head and I had to check them out further.

Upon investigation, I realized not only are they an apparel company but they are really a seemingly awesome pair of women! They promote amazing things.. For example their new strength series, which is sharing the stories of some inspiring women and their battles with cancer. They are changing the face of women’s strength through their small company and it is so impressive! And while you’re thinking how sweet! You are probably also thinking are their headbands actually any good though? So to answer your question…

I received two headbands. One being of their thicker options, a 1-inch, and the other being of their “thinny” collection. (Tell me that isn’t a super cute name of a collection?!) The headbands I received were freakin adorable. I was obsessed with the designs right away. The thinny being just a more basic cute girly green and the 1 inch being an awesome flowery type design with one of my favorite color combos! πŸ™‚ I was immediately excited to try them out… Though still had my doubts of whether I would like the whole headband thing any more than I did last time.

The first headband I tried was the thicker band. I used it when I went for a run on a super windy day. I used it for a couple yoga sessions and some small at home workouts. I also wore it just as a casual outfit piece when I was in yoga pants and a tank hanging around for the day. In all 4 instances it was awesome! It stayed in place, it was comfortable, and it actually did its good of keeping my hair out of my damn face for once! It’s felt like backing kept its traction on my hair and really did all the dirty work while not taking away from the beautiful designs. And best of all, they’re adjustable! So I could make it as tight or loose on my head as I wanted depending on what function I needed it to provide. How awesome is that?!

Now on to the thinny. Honestly, even after my great experience I was nervous about this little one. It is no doubt adorable but my hair has a mind of its own and I wasn’t sure if the smaller band would do the job quite as well. You see, thin bands are what I had tried in the past without much (or any) success.

So I decided to REALLY put this one to the test. I wore it to crossfit for a workout that involved 4 full minutes of double unders, an exercise which has always driven me hair crazy! To my extreme surprise, it was AMAZING! It did everything I wanted and impressed me beyond belief. Now I know I am just talking about a headband here haha but you don’t understand the issues I typically have with keeping my hair in place. I don’t have thick hair but I have hair that apparently has its own agenda and no desire to listen to me. So finding something that actually keeps it in place and tells it to shut down the free attitude is spectacular

Basically, these headbands get a 10 out of 10 in my book! And lucky for all you guys, you get the change to try them out for yourself! πŸ™‚
